SUMMARY
>>Rssendyll was pleased to say goodbye to Michael & his soldiers but not the princess. He wanted to tell her the truth. He asked himself if he was wrong to lie to her.

Flavia : Rudolf, be careful, won't you?
R : Be careful of what?
>>F: I can't say but I think your life means to the people of Ruritania.

>>Rassendyll remembered Rose's words about the position of his brother, Robert, with its responsibilities. He himself wanted to live a quiet life.
Rassendyll's popularity was growing among the people. He sometimes made mistakes but they forgave him.
One day Sapt came with a letter

>>Sapt : a letter for you. From the writing I think it 's from a woman. I also have some important news.

R : What's it?
>>S: we now know that the king's at the castle of Zenda.

R : How do you know this?
>>S: We asked where the rest of the six men were. We found out they all were at the castle.

R : Do you think the king is definitely there?
>>S : Certainly, the three men are there. The drawbridge is always up. This isn't normal. No one goes into the building without the permission of Rupert or Michael.

>>R : Then I must go to Zenda.
>>S : That won't be a good idea.
>>R : If not today, then soon. I must go.
>>S : you'll probably stay there forever if you do.

There was silence. Sapt was studying Rassendyll's face.

>>S : What's worrying you, Rassendyll.
>>R : Why is it that wherever I go in the capital, I'm followed by 6 people.
>>S : Because I've ordered them to follow you.

R : But why?
>>S : It would be useful for Michael if you disappeared. If you disappeared, the game is over.
>>R : I don't need much help. I can look after mydelf.

S : The three men are in Strelsau. Anyone could catch you easily. So what's that letter?
>>He opened the letter & read aloud. The sender asked Rassendyll to go alone at midnight to a house to get important news about his life. If he didn't come alone, his life would be in danger. The sender asked Rassendyll not to show the letter to anyone or the life of a woman would be in danger. Michael would punish her.

>>Sapt : Yes, & Michael can surely write a very good letter.

>>Rassendyll thought the same & Michael would like to trap him. he was about to throw it but there was more writing at the back. '' If you don't believe me, ask Colonel Sapt, what woman has been a guest of the Duke. Ask if her name begins with A.''

>>R : It must be Antoinette de Mauban.

S : How do you know?
>>R : I've heard she came to Ruritania with her servants as a guest of Michael . People say she had some argument with Michael & now she is staying somewhere in Strelsau. >>So she could be useful to us.
>>S : Perhaps she could be useful to us if she had information about Michael. However, I believe Michael wrote that letter.
>>R : So do I. but I'm not certain. I'll go to the house tonight.
>>S : No, you mustn't. let me go instead.
>>R : You can come too, but you must wait outside the gate when I go alone.
>>S : I don’t believe this woman & you're mad to go alone.
>>R : I believe this woman & I'll go. Either I go to the house or I go back to England.

>>We don't have much time, every day we leave the king imprisoned there's more danger. We must move quickly.

>>Sapt agreed & at night they went there. Sapt waited outside the gate. Rassendyll followed the instructions & entered the house.

>>Antoinette : Shut the door. I know who you are & I know you aren't the king. You're Rassendyll. I wrote that letter to you at the Duke's orders. In 20 minutes, 3 men will be here to kill you.

R : Or, I'll kill them! I suppose they're three of the Duke's 6 men?

>>Antoinette : Yes, you must leave here before they arrive, so listen carefully! The plan is to kill you & to take your body into the old town. Sapt & Fritz will be arrested for murdering you. Then a message will be sent to Zenda & the real king will be murdered too. Michael will be the king.

R : I understand. It's a clever plan. But why are you helping me?
>>A : I don't like to see people being killed. Remember you're never safe in this city. You have guards following you. Michael's men are following them. If you are alone, then you'll die.

>>She told Rassendyll the way to escape.

R : And what will you do?
>>A : I also have a game to play. I'll tell the Duke's me you've never came. If the Duke doesn't find out what I've done, we may meet again.

R : Thank you. You've helped the king tonight. Do you know where he's in the castle?
>>A : Yes, inside the castle, there's a door on the right, & behind that but listen! They are here. It's too late for you to escape!

>>Rassendyll looked through a gap & saw three men.

Detchard: Are you in there, Rassendyll? We want to make you an offer. Will you let us in?
>>Antoinette : Don't trust them.

>>R : Stand outside & talk. I won't let you in.
>>Detchard : That's a good idea.

R : Is that Mr. Detchard?
>>Detchard: Our name's aren't important. We can offer you a safe journey to the border & 50, 000 £
>>R : That sounds a generous offer. Give me a minute to think.

''He took an iron leg by the legs''
>>Gentlemen I'd like to accept your offer. Perhaps you can open the door for me.

Detchard : Why don't you open the door yourself?
>>R : Very well but it opens outwards. You'll need to step back or the door will hit you.

''Pretending to open it''
>>I can't open it.
>>Detchard : Then I'll open it.

>>They fired but the iron table protected him so Rassendyll ran towards them. They all fell. He ran quickly. He used the ladder & soon climbed over the wall. There were shoots.

>>R : Sapt, It's me, Let's go!
>>Sapt : You're safe!
>>R : I've a fine story to tell you about a table!

>>The next day Sapt was reading the latest report from the chief of the police.

>>It says that the Duke of Strelsau & his 3 men left the capital to Zenda. Detchard had a bandage around his arm. Sapt was pleased that his shot had been good. Finally, the people were not pleased that the king has yet to marry the princess. Some say that if the king don't marry the princess, it'll be better for her to marry the Duke. However the king is having a ball tonight.

>>R : " I don't know anything about the ball.
>>F : it has been all prepared by me.
>>S : You must ask the princess to marry you tonight.
>>R : I can't do that. It wouldn't be fair to the princess.

During the ball, having coffee
>>F : you've been king for a few weeks. People say that you're doing a good job.
>>R : you know, once a person said to me that '' a person who has a position in society has responsibilities. Recently I've realized how true this is.
>>F : Haven't you always thought that.
>>R : No, when I was younger, I didn't think I needed to worry about society. I thought that was someone else's job.

F : ''surprised'' but you always knew that you would be a king. How could you think that was someone else's job?
>>R : There's something you should know. I'm not really……
>>Sapt appeared at the French window apologizing & telling him there's someone who wants to see him.
>>The next day, Rassendyll was talking with Sapt
>>R : Do you realize that every one really thinks I'm the king, even the princess. I could arrange for the Duke & the real king to be killed.

S : This is all true. So will you do such a thing?
>>R : Of course not. I shouldn't be here, pretending to be anything. It's not fair for the people of Ruritania & for the princess either. We can't wait any longer. We must go to Zenda & rescue the king.
>>S : You're a good man.

AT Flavia's palace

>>He visited her to warn her as the situation in Ruritania isn't so good as she thinks. She told him she had received 2 letters. One was from Michael inviting her to visit Zenda. The other she didn't know the writer but Rassendyll knew. It was from Antoinette.
'' You don't know me, but I don't want you to fall into the power of the Duke. Don't accept any invitation from him & don't go anywhere without many guards. Show this letter, if you can, to the leader of Ruritania.

F : Why does it say ' the leader' & not the king?
>>R : You must do as the letter says. I'll order guards to watch you.

F : Do you know who sent this letter?
>>R : A friend of mine. Today you must say you're ill so you can't go to Zenda.

F : So you don't mind making Michael angry?
>>R : I don't mind anything if you are safe.

>>Rassendyll visited Marshal Strakencz who he trusted. He asked him to guard the the princess & not to allow any of the Duke's men to visit her. Rassendyll told him he was worried about the Duke's ambitions. Strakencz wasn't surprised. He told him he was leaving Strelsau for a few days. Every day he would send him a message. If he didn't get a message for 3 days, he'd have the authority to say that he was the head of Strelsau. He had to ask Michael to see the king, if Michael didn't allow him to see the king in 24 hours, he had to say that the king was dead. He had to tell the people of Ruritania who their new ruler would be. The marshal knew that it was the princess, ofcourse
